Finding Rejuvenation in a Thrift Shop

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Earlier this week I stumbled up "Hand's Up Thrift Shop," tucked quietly away on Leonie Street, located right off Johnston. Clothing, antiques, odds, and ends filled every nook and cranny in the most maximalist manner. The smell of aged tweed and leather filled my nostrils. Dimly lit and a little dusty, I perused around the shop, inspecting each unique display and finding hidden gems for a steal. Priced well for sale, I began to plan out how to give a new life to these long-forgotten treasures. A simple cleaning, ironing, button replacement, nip here, tuck there would bring a new life and a second chance to these abandoned gems. This is how the Holy Spirit works inside of us. He renews us through the edification of His word (Bible). For those who may not know, edification is the instruction or improvement of a person morally or intellectually. We see this concept explained in Romans 12:2,

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect". The Bible is a guide on how to live in this world and guard our spirits. Our spirits are influenced by what we let into our bodies through our gateways. Our gateways are our eyes, ears, mouths, nose, and through our sex organs. This is easy to prove through a few examples:

1.)Watch a horror movie-you will be filled with fear long after the movie is over. Luke 11:33-36 explains,"

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

2.) Listen to subject matter/songs promoting a culture of death can fill you with feelings of hopelessness/sorrow/depression-Proverbs 15:31,

"The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise".

3.)Overeating/overindulgence is linked to tiredness/low motivation/laziness -Proverbs 23:20-21,

"Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags".

4.)Go on a drinking binge-you will experience lowered inhibition. Proverbs 23:29-35

"Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who tarry long over wine; those who go to try mixed wine. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end, it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart utter perverse things. You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, like one who lies on the top of a mast.“They struck me,” you will say, “but I was not hurt; they beat me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake? I must have another drink.”

5.)Partake in recreational substance abuse- 1 Peter 5:8,

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour".

6.) Premarital sex - 1 Corinthians 6:16,

"Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.” A person pursuing a casual sexual encounter may not want to become one flesh with their partner, but they do in some spiritual sense. Part of themself is given to that person, and it means there is less to give to the Lord and to the partner God intends for them. In the Biblical understanding of sex, there is no such thing as “casual sex.”(Source BlueLetterBible, David Guznik Commentary).

All this only to reiterate how we are influenced by what we let in our bodies. The Holy Spirit acts as a filter and disinfectant to our souls. If we allow Him by making a conscious effort to change our mindset by developing a relationship with Christ, He begins to heal/cultivate us. Just like those abandoned rags at the thrift store, we can experience

rejuvenation.
