Ultimate Gray and Illuminating

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

Panetone has selected ultimate gray and illuminating yellow as 2021's Colors of the Year. I'd like to think that the color selections are closely tied to the despair 2020 brought many and for the hopeful optimism of the future.

Biblically speaking there is a lot of symbolism observed with these colors. Yellow ( often interchangeable with gold) has represented God's presence within us, on the earth ( Jehovah-Shammah), and His council. Vincent Van Gogh was once a radical evangelist who utilized yellow in his paintings to signify God's presence and love. It is the third color found in the rainbow (symbolism of God's promise). Yellow and gold are also colors seen in fires which are symbolic of purification. Zechariah 13:9 "And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It [is] my people: and they shall say, The LORD [is] my God". It can denote sickness (leprosy) as seen in Leviticus chapter 13 as is gives the regulations for handling this highly infectious disease. Exodus 30:22-23 describes how olive oil (yellow in hue) was used to anoint priests so they would have the authority, glory, and responsibility to act on behalf of the Holy Spirit.

Gray is often linked with destruction. Hosea chapter 7:9 speaks of how Ephraim has become hypnotized by idol gods. If you read the entire chapter you will discover how a nation who God loved had forgot about Him and will not repent; God begins to set judgement . Gray is also associated with ashes during a time of penance and mourning, Esther 4:3,"And in every province, wherever the king's command and his decree reached, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting and weeping and lamenting, and many of them lay in sackcloth and ashes,".

2 Chronicles 7:13-14,"When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land,". God's people are the salt of the earth, but what is the value of salt without the savor?
